The Challenge
Operating in the Bay of Bothnia, the icebreaker vessel faces extreme arctic conditions (-30°C, high winds, ice) and requires reliable visibility to monitor the engine room, deck, and towed vessels.
The Solution
29 high-definition Bosch cameras, including rugged MIC moving cameras and a 360-degree panoramic camera, were installed with remote pan-tilt-zoom capabilities and automated wipers.
The Results
The cameras operate flawlessly in total darkness and adverse weather, providing critical situational awareness and drastically reducing the need for the crew to conduct routine physical patrols.
“The exterior cameras allow us to monitor the ice and customer vessels... The cameras save time – routine tours of the various parts of the vessel don't need to be conducted as frequently.”

The Challenge
Finland relies heavily on maritime trade, making its fleet of icebreakers essential for keeping shipping lanes and ports navigable during severe winter months. The Icebreaker Polaris operates in the Bay of Bothnia under extreme arctic conditions, where a crew of 17 must maintain rigorous safety standards while guiding and towing commercial vessels through treacherous, pitch-dark environments.
The Solution
To ensure comprehensive situational awareness without exposing the crew to hazardous manual inspections, the vessel was equipped with an intelligence-first video security solution. Ruggedized, high-definition cameras were strategically deployed across the engine rooms, mast, and deck structures. These robust devices feature remote control, specialized wipers, and exceptional low-light capabilities to deliver stable, clear imaging regardless of sleet, wind, or freezing temperatures.
The Results
By integrating reliable visual intelligence into daily operations, the crew can continuously monitor critical machinery, assess ice conditions, and precisely gauge the distance of towed vessels from the bridge. This real-time understanding removes blind spots and reduces operational friction, empowering the captain to make decisive, safe maneuvers in an unforgiving environment.
