Sydney Harbour Tunnel

The Challenge

The critical infrastructure required a massive digital upgrade from analog to IP cameras without interrupting traffic flows, aiming to improve situational awareness and automate emergency responses.

The Solution

124 Bosch cameras, including MIC 7000i PTZ and fixed AVIOTEC models, were deployed with edge-based analytics to detect fire and smoke directly within the camera.

The Results

Metadata and analytics instantly trigger the tunnel's exhaust and sprinkler systems upon fire detection, while simultaneous traffic counting capabilities streamline operations for the control room.

Because we are going to digital, there’s a lot of focus on analytics and metadata... In the case of these Bosch cameras, the metadata and analytics are in the cameras and if you want to use them, they’re already there.

The Challenge

The Sydney Harbour Tunnel is a critical piece of infrastructure located 25 meters underwater, managing massive daily traffic flows across the city. When it was time to upgrade its aging analog surveillance system, operators required a fully digital, highly automated solution that could synchronize incident detection and emergency response protocols without causing unacceptable roadway closures.

The Solution

To achieve this modernization, the tunnel integrated an intelligence-first video security solution. A network of rugged moving cameras and specialized fire-detection cameras was deployed throughout the corridor. Utilizing built-in video analytics, the system continuously analyzes traffic patterns and autonomously detects the visual signatures of smoke or fire, linking these events directly to the tunnel’s distributed controllers to automatically trigger exhaust and sprinkler systems.

The Results

By processing intelligence directly at the edge, the solution shifts operations from manual observation to predictive, automated response. This real-time understanding empowers control room operators to verify incidents instantly and execute emergency plans with absolute confidence, ensuring the highest levels of safety and keeping city traffic moving smoothly.
